Lebkuchen is sold at the Christmas markets in Germany. The word “Lebkuchen” comes from the old German word “lebbe” meaning very sweet and ‘kuchen’ means cake. These are German traditional cookies.

The Lebkuchenherzen — the more specific name for the heart-shaped Lebkuchen — have become very important in German celebrations, especially around Christmas time. These biscuits are sweet and spicy.

Nuremberg is the most popular place in Germany to sell and buy Lebkuchen. I bought some when I went there a few years ago and I couldn’t wait to try and make some myself! They were very yummy! Below is the recipe in German.
