Qui \u00e9taient Sylvia Beach et Adrienne Monnier\u202f? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans le 20\u00e8me<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, Paris \u00e9tait un centre litt\u00e9raire et culturel, et apr\u00e8s la fin de la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale, un afflux \u00e9norme d\u2019auteurs et de cr\u00e9atifs expatri\u00e9s est venu \u00e0 Paris, pour \u00e9crire, publier et cr\u00e9er. Une de ces personnes \u00e9tait Sylvia Beach, une femme am\u00e9ricaine, qui a grandi \u00e0 New Jersey, o\u00f9 son p\u00e8re \u00e9tait pasteur. Sylvia avait toujours aim\u00e9 la France, et apr\u00e8s avoir voyag\u00e9 en Europe et travaill\u00e9 avec la Croix-Rouge pendant la guerre, elle a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d\u2019ouvrir une librairie anglaise \u00e0 Paris. En m\u00eame temps, Adrienne Monnier venait d\u2019ouvrir sa propre librairie en 1915, faisant d\u2019elle une des premi\u00e8res femmes \u00e0 ouvrir sa propre librairie en France. Who were Sylvia Beach and Adrienne Monnier?<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 20th century, Paris was a literary and cultural hub, and after the end of WWI, a huge influx of expatriate authors and creatives came to Paris, to write, publish and create. One such person was Sylvia Beach, an American woman, who grew up in New Jersey, where her father was a pastor. Sylvia had always loved France, and after travelling around Europe and working with the Red Cross during the war, she decided to open an English-language bookshop in Paris. At the same time, Adrienne Monnier had just opened her own bookshop, making her one of the first women to open her own bookshop. She was born in Paris, and she would grow up to become an influential author, publisher and bookshop owner. <\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did they meet?<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sylvia discovered Adrienne\u2019s bookshop, which was called \u2018The house of friends of books\u2019, and she became a member of the lending library there. This introduced her to the French literary community in Paris. After spending time with Adrienne, Sylvia decided to realise her passion for literature by opening her own bookshop and lending library, with Adrienne\u2019s help and experience. \u2018Shakespeare and Company\u2019 opened its doors in 1919, and Sylvia and Adrienne remained close, becoming lovers and living together for 36 years, until Adrienne\u2019s suicide after a long illness in 1955. <\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sylvia Beach est c\u00e9l\u00e8bre pour avoir publi\u00e9 \u2018Ulysse\u2019 de James Joyce. Sylvia n\u2019a jamais eu l\u2019intention de devenir \u00e9ditrice, mais \u2018Ulysse\u2019 \u00e9tait un cas particulier. What did they accomplish?<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sylvia Beach is most famous for publishing \u2018Ulysses\u2019 by James Joyce. Sylvia never had the intention of becoming a publisher, but \u2018Ulysses\u2019 was a special case. In Britain and in the US, the book was deemed to be obscene, so nobody would publish it. Sylvia did not want the book to be lost, so she decided to publish it herself. The work was not easy \u2013 she had very little money and it was not always easy to work with Joyce. However, she managed to publish \u2018Ulysses\u2019 and distribute it around the world, despite the bans and censorship laws in the USA. The book has since been called \u2018a literary masterpiece\u2019 and life-changing \u2013 and it would not have been possible without Sylvia Beach. During her work with \u2018Ulysses\u2019, her bookshop remained a centre for authors in Paris, and Sylvia supported the likes of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and many more by stocking their books and introducing them to publishers. Adrienne\u2019s bookshop was also full of great authors, and there were regular readings of new works. Adrienne published her own literary review, which introduced English-speaking authors (like Hemingway) to the French public. Also, she was wan author herself, and she published journals, essays, and diaries.
