Martha (Y11) shares a story about her day trip to Nantes during her holiday in France!

They say you haven\u2019t really done France until you\u2019ve pretended to understand wine. Personally, I\u2019d say the real moment is when your dad spills his all over your cardigan. But I\u2019m getting ahead of myself. This summer, I spent a few weeks in Quimiac with my friend Asha. There were many highlights, of course: the scenery, the genuinely fantastic markets, and being woken up every morning by Asha\u2019s frankly questionable music taste at maximum volume. The mornings always began with sunlight spilling through the curtains, a violent shake awake from Asha who was already up and dressed, and by the time we made it outside, the streets were always already humming with life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most days followed the same easy rhythm, always ending up by the water. We spent our afternoons paddleboarding, the sea cool and clear, glittering under the sun, and the shore dotted with colourful towels and families enjoying the heat. We sat on the paddleboard, watching the occasional small fish dart through the water beneath us and admiring the beautiful wildlife around us (excluding both jellyfish and seaweed which neither one of us liked). Most of the time, though, we were busy trying to tip each other into the sea. I\u2019d like to believe I was the reigning champion, although I\u2019m sure Asha would strongly disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Asha left, the house felt oddly empty. For a few days, I had no one to talk to, and I quickly discovered that paddleboarding alone is not nearly as fun as it sounds. So, when my dad suggested a trip to Nantes, I agreed immediately, although mostly because I had nothing better to do, and partly because he promised there would be food.<\/p>\n\n\n

Nous avons pris le train tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t le matin et, en arrivant, la ville avait l\u2019air tr\u00e8s anim\u00e9e.\u00a0D\u2019abord, nous avons visit\u00e9 le ch\u00e2teau, o\u00f9 il y avait une exposition sur Hokusai. C\u2019\u00e9tait fascinant et les \u0153uvres \u00e9taient tr\u00e8s impressionnantes. Apr\u00e8s, nous avons d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d\u2019aller manger. En France, il faut d\u00e9jeuner entre midi et trois heures, car les restaurants ferment pour une pause.\u00a0Nous \u00e9tions arriv\u00e9s trop tard, donc nous avons achet\u00e9 quelques avant de continuer notre visite.<\/p>\n\n\n

Les animaux m\u00e9caniques<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

L\u2019apr\u00e8s-midi, nous sommes all\u00e9s voir Les Machines de l\u2019\u00cele, un endroit o\u00f9 les animaux m\u00e9caniques prennent vie. L\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9phant g\u00e9ant \u00e9tait incroyable. Il marchait lentement dans la rue et beaucoup de gens le regardaient. Je ne l\u2019ai pas mont\u00e9, mais j\u2019ai trouv\u00e9 que c\u2019\u00e9tait une id\u00e9e tr\u00e8s cr\u00e9ative.\u00a0Si j\u2019avais\u00a0eu\u00a0mon appareil photo, j\u2019aurais\u00a0pris\u00a0<\/strong>beaucoup d\u2019images.<\/p>\n\n\n

Le soir, nous avons enfin trouv\u00e9 un restaurant pour d\u00eener et j\u2019ai mang\u00e9 une pizza d\u00e9licieuse. Puis, il y a eu un d\u00e9sastre: mon p\u00e8re a renvers\u00e9 son vin sur moi, sur la pizza et sur mes v\u00eatements. Heureusement, le personnel nous a offert une autre pizza, ce qui \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s gentil.\u00a0Cependant, ce n\u2019\u00e9tait vraiment pas\u00a0la\u00a0bonne journ\u00e9e\u00a0de\u00a0porter un cardigan blanc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
